CH Boiga dendrophila?

PerryA Jun 06, 2007 09:37 PM

I have nearly abandoned all hope of finding CB Mangroves. It just struck me that I haven't even seen any CH for sale either. Could anyone shed some light on this for me? Thanks.

Perry

There were some captive born baby Mangroves in the classifieds about a week ago.
Captive bred are nearly impossible to come by. I'm not exactly sure why that is, but I haven't seen any CB Mangroves in the last three years.
Keep your eyes on the classifieds.

Wow, I must have missed that. If anyone out there has CH babies, please contact me. Yeah, its a mystery to me. I can't figure out why no one has CB. I'm hoping someone on the forum could explain this for me. Thanks Roy.

There are really many reasons you dont see many CB hots.

Over abundance of cheap imports and people not willing to spend more on cb

Most venomous are quirky when it comes to breeding. They tend to be much more difficult than snakes you see commonly bred.

Mangroves just arent as commonly kept and those that do keep them dont keep Higher numbers of animals it will require to determine the tricks of their breeding.

I just picked up this girl from that add last week.

PerryA Jun 07, 2007 05:00 PM

That's a beautiful girl. Congrats. Do you know if they have anymore? How can I contact them? Thanks.

Weekendherper Jun 07, 2007 05:28 PM

I'd be suprised if any were left, but they were offered by William Gillingham at the Great Valley Serpentarium. Good luck with your search.

Sharkman20 Jun 08, 2007 01:49 PM

Nice, what are you feeding it right now?

Weekendherper Jun 08, 2007 04:31 PM

She is eating 2 small f/t pinks every 6 days. (only 2 feedings so far)

Sharkman20 Jun 08, 2007 06:11 PM

Nice. I bought a 5+ft WC mangrove about 5 months ago and he's doing awesome. I got him all taken care of parasite wise and he's growing nicely now. I was going to try to switch him to mice, but I found a feed store that sells day old chicks in large supply. That, and being as adult mice cost around 2 dollars where I live from the pet store and the day old chicks are 75 cents and are larger, I get more bang for my buck just keeping him on birds. The feces smells a bit more with birds, but I started using coconut mulch for the substrate and it pretty much absorbs all the smell.

Nice looking snake & setup. How's it's temperament been? I was suprised at how calm mine is during the day, but was told that she may grow into the typical mangrove aggression. In my experince with other species it's usually the opposite, as they tend to calm down as adults.

Sharkman20 Jun 08, 2007 10:59 PM

Thanks. For the setup I just went and collected a bunch of driftwood from the lake near here and cut it down to size and sterilized it. Then bought about 70 feet worth of reptivines and wrapped them around the driftwood. haha. I have a habba mist suctioned up on the left side to keep the humidity up between 75% and 85%. I'm still debating on putting lighting in the cage. He's always hiding in the darkest corner during the daytime and only comes out at night when it's pitch black in the room so I don't really see much point in it, other than putting one in to show off the pretty "empty" cage. lol. Also I couldn't find the size cage I wanted for an arboreal snake so I had one custom made from monster cages. Their prices are pretty good and they had it sent out to me in no time.

He was pretty psychotic when I first got him, striking at everything, bent on trying to kill me. haha. He would even start striking the side of the rubbermaid tub I had him in temporarily when I would walk in the room. I threw a blanket over the tub so he wouldn't hurt himself. Now he's mellowed down considerably. While he won't strike at the glass anymore when he's active, I certainly wouldn't stick my hand in there at any time during the night. During the day time however, he's practically comatose which made it really easy to treat him for parasites since he wouldn't eat until about 2 months after I had him. Now he eats regularly every week, though I've yet to see him eat since he only does it in darkness and if I put the food in before he comes out for his active night cycle. Maybe I'll set up a nightvision camera system. haha.

Other than that he's an awesome snake. Definately the most interesting snake I've ever had. I'll have to pick up a black and white phase when I get more room. Preferably female.

I have a CBB female dendrophila. I got her from Chad Husker of Crazy Fools Reptiles 3 years ago. She was around 3.5 feet when I got her, she's now ~6.5 or so She definitely has her phases she goes through...sometimes she is calm and extremely easy to work with, and is for extended periods of time (for a few months) and then all of a sudden she will flip into demon phase for a few months. She's currently in demon phase. Also, around December, she refuses food until around February or March. I don't change the temps at all during this time, so I'm not sure what triggers it, but she maintains good weight and always starts eating again in Feb, so it doesn't bother me.

Anyway, she was a bit pricey ($250), but well worth it.

Weekendherper Jun 13, 2007 05:06 PM

I'd certainly pay extra too for a cbb.

PerryA Jun 13, 2007 06:21 PM

Wouldn't hesitate. That's what makes me wonder, why aren't there more CBB out there? Are they that difficult to breed? It can't possibly be lack of a market for them. I'd pay $250 for a CB animal over $75 for a WC anyday. Any thoughts?
