RES , Filter Problems, Etc.

Lisahart Jun 08, 2007 02:42 PM

I have a RES that about 4 years old. I need to get a 40 gallon tank but am not sure what type of filter to buy. I am currently using a filter that sort of keeps the 20 gallon clean. I have to change the water and filter often. I have spent probably 200 on filters over the years hoping one might work really well. The people in the pet stores here have no clue about which filter to use. Possibly because in NJ it is illegal to sell them, and possibly because they hire kids and don't bother to train them. I have looked for a "real" petstore that has some expertise in turtle but have not found any thus far. Can anyone give me the name of a specific brand of filter that will work and keep the tank water clean? I have tried takinig the turtle out and feeding him in a large container but he doesn't seem to want to eat unless he's in his tank. HELP! Thanks-Lisa

I would recommend a slightly larger tank, maybe a 75 gallon for a 4 year old turtle. With that 75 gallon, a Rena XP3 filstar will keep the water crystal clear. I Have 2 of them hooked up to my 120 gallon, and they work wonderfully. I used one in my 75 for two turtles, and it woked quite well three too.
