SNAPPER EGGS - HUMIDITY

MARK FARRELL Jun 10, 2007 08:59 AM

Hello all: I've incubated - snake, lizard & box turle eggs succesfully. yesterday I found two dead snapping turles on the road. Both filled with eggs. I found them within hours of getting hit by cars. I rounded up 30 eggs 18 from from one and 12 from the other. I thought i'd take a shot at trying to make something good out of a bad situation. What temp & humidity are best? snake & lizrds are high humidity.

Please help. who knows - maybe I can pull this off.

PS: has anyone tried this and had success ?

Mark

It shouldn't be a problem. I used vermiculite and soak it in another container and then squeeze as much water out of it as you can. Put that mixture in a plastic shoe box container at a depth of 2.5 to 3 inches or so and half bury the eggs. Make sure you don't turn them when you place them in the container. I would try to keep them between 80 and 84 degrees or so and they should hatch in around 60 to 65 days. My father in law butchered snappers in MI and the one time I was up there I collected 12 eggs from one butchered turtle and brought them back to AL where they all hatched.
Where are you from?
Good luck!

how did you get the eggs out?

MARK FARRELL Jun 17, 2007 10:02 PM

THE TURTLES WERE DEAD. THEY BOTH HAD BIG OPEN WOUNDS. I PULLED A BUNCH OF THE EGGS OUT OF THE BODIES, SOME WERE ON THE ROAD. THE TURTLES WERE DEAD FOR A NUMBER OF HOURS. I COLLECTED 30 EGGS
THERE'S ONLY A FEW WHICH EVEN LOOK LIKE THEY HAVE A CHANCE. i INCUBATING AT 80% HUMIDITY 78 DEGREES.
WHO KNOWS? IF ANY HATCH WE'RE AHEAD OF THE GAME INSTEAD OFA TOTAL LOSS
