I have caught a ground snake that was about to be smashed by a shovel. I brought him home and put him in a cage. I got him to eat 3 crickets the second day in captivity. I have not really found any care info on these guys and have a couple questions.

What substarte works best?

How much do they eat. This ones about 12''.

Anyone else keeping these. I never have seen one in the classifieds.

Also e-mail me if you want a picture. The one I have is to big to post.

Ken

Ground snakes are cool. I know of a few folks who have kept them for a short period before returning them to their capture sight. I imagine they could be kept successfully for at least a few years.

The shredded coconut product works well, like Bed-a-Beast. A friend kept his on newspaper. The snakes will eat crickets, spiders and maybe centipedes. Active at night more than day. Make sure fresh water is available at all times, and I think a screen top or partial screen top is best.

I don't know if they require a humid hide.

I kept a shovelnose snake for a few years pretty much as described above. It did great using overhead heat and pretty much kept dry except for occasional soaks. Small snake, small cage. Never saw it out during the day.

Thaks for the response. This is quite a weird ground snake. He doesn't mind comming out every once in a while during the day. I have caught him eating a couple crickets. I do not think I can return him to the same spot. For risk of people. The only problem I have right now is the king snake wants to eat him.
