Trimming Neonate's Nails

Gsc Jun 18, 2007 02:54 PM

I was wondering how many of y'all trim your gila/beaded's nails. My adult is mellow, so keeping his nails short is no problem...the yearling is manageable. I have 4 babies I'm raising up and their nails are getting long. They are really "wiggley" and after getting nipped by one a few months back- I am kinda uneasy about restraining them to cut the nails.

My "plan of action" is to get a pair of those midwest gloves ...hopefully I will not loose too much dexterity... hold them that way while I trim the nails... Does anyone have the gloves?

Some of the pics I see of people's animals have long nails... In nature they constatnly grind them down on the rocks/soil/digging... Being lazy in a neodesha on aspen doesn't do anything but let their nails grow.....

Any hints/tips....

Graham

JUST AN FYI - I'VE KEPT GILAS FOR YEARS AND USE MID-ARM LENGTH WELDERS GLOVES TO HANDLE MY ANIMALS WITHOUT ANY PROBLEMS AT ALL. YOU CAN PICK UP THESE GLOVES AT ANY TRACTOR SUPPLY COMPANY FOR $10 AND THEY ARE JUST AS EFFECTIVE.

Graham,
All you need is a pair of leather work gloves from home depot 20$ no need for midwest gloves on babies.
Have fun,

Thanks y'all for the answer...exactly what I was looking for!

BTW: Steve- Those beadeds are amazing...they are really coloring up...I can't even imagine how outrageous their adult coloration will be!

The insulated welder's gloves I found at a Home Depot worked fine. In fact, once picked up, the babies stopped all their "huffin' and puffin'"... The nails were trimmed on all six beadeds without any trouble.... Thanks everyone.
