Can I ship FedEx Reptiles legally?

streamwalker Jun 19, 2007 07:37 PM

I was trying to become Certified to ship reptiles legally and the reps are arguing with me that I can't.

I been told that it is not legal?

I tried calling my account rep; which was stated on another site: In steps to being Certified to ship reptiles via Fed EX.

No Dice.

Folks down in Dallas, Texas called back stating there was never such a thing?

Any or knowledge is appreciated.

Thanks,

Ric

Your rep is correct. Shipping reptiles is not allowed with any of the standard carriers. It's considered Hazmat.

Your rep needs to read his own FedEx website:

"If approved by FedEx, we may accept non-venomous reptiles, amphibians, live/tropical fish and beneficial insects on an exception basis under the following conditions:

Shipments must be from a business to a business (from a breeder to a pet store, for example).
The shipper must have its packaging tested and pre-approved by FedEx Packaging Design and Development for the type of animal being shipped. Call 1.800.633.7019 for assistance. It is the responsibility of the shipper to adequately package shipments for all temperature extremes and handling conditions.

Contact your FedEx account executive for details and additional requirements."

Call that 1-800 number and ask to be connected to the package testing center. Say you want to send in a package for testing to be certified to ship live reptiles. I just did this and had no problems whatsoever. They showed me where to go on the internet to get the form to submit along with my box and start the process. It is legal.

Please keep us updated. Last time I tried doing this, they said that I had to be signed up for weekly pickups from home. On top of that, if I didn't have a package to be picked up that week, I'd be charged anyway.

I have been certified officially for a while now and have not had any problems. There are no minimums or weekly pickups, so I'm not sure why you were told that. I just ship when I need to, which is only every once in a while.

Shipping reptiles is perfectly legal via FedEx although you must become certified first.

Why not just ship what you want, and NOT tell them what's in the box. As long as it's not potentially harmful, dangerous, or venomous,my feeling is that it's none of their bloody business what's in the box. They just need to deliver it, and mind their own beezwax. As I understand it, the spirit of the law is simply to let the shipper know when they are carrying something potentially dangerous. So as long as you aren't shipping hots,...who cares.

If they realize a live animal is in a box they are handling they may treat it with more care rather than just some random box they can throw around.

If anything goes wrong, and trust me eventually it will, it's a lot nicer being able to call Fedex and be honest about what is in the box. You will get a much quicker response when they realize you are dealing with a live animal. The sneaky route just isn't worth it in the end, especially when it is SO easy to get certified and have total peace of mind.
