I think my russian tortoises nails are getting too long. I want to clip them but I am afraid that I might hurt the tortoise. There is a darker part of the nail in the middle, do I clip those off too? Any tips?

Your tort will have nails like those of a bird. Can you see a clear-ish tip, and a darker "quick?" Just snip the clear part. If you're afraid of cutting too much, you can always file them with a nail file. If you're really afraid of cutting too much, buy a bottle of Quick (Kwik?) Stop powder, in the bird or dog section. It stops bleeding very fast. Just do a little bit at a time.

thanks alot. So, if I cut the black part, it'll start bleeding? My russian torotise has a lot of nail left on her. Is that normal?

I guess I'd just file them with a nail file a little bit each day now that you are down to the quick.
