Indiana snapper

jtclark Jun 20, 2007 09:37 PM

Saw this guy basking on a sidewalk just up from a small pond in a residential area. I don't know much about turtles, but he looks very well fed. Is it overweight or is this normal for snappers? He was found just north of Indianapolis.

That's very normal for a snapper. It'll get much bigger, depending on food sources in the area. They get huge and very heavy, impossible to pick up even when they're only a few years old, because they can stretch their neck all the way around to their back legs and snap at you.
