Hostas Poisonous to Tortoises?

smeese Jun 24, 2007 09:45 PM

I built an outdoor pen for my Cherryhead tort trio to roam in and I am wondering if I put it around a Hosta so they have some shade from the plant will it be dangerous if ingested? Thanks! Steve

I would suggest Hosta will be toxic to your torts. Have a look at http://www.dr-dan.com/newpage16.htm for a short list of toxic plants to many pets.

Red Foots are like Yellow foots will eat or try to eat anything in their pens. Personally I would keep Hosta plants well away from my torts and instead would grow a large plantains or some other Tortoise friendly/food plant – See the list at this site http://www.turtlestuff.com/foodplantlists.html or http://www.tlady.clara.net/TortGuide/Diet.htm

Good luck in finding a Tort friendly plant for their pen.

Hello,

I keep redfoots with Hostas without any problems. They love to hide under them. Will ocassionally bite at the leaves in the Spring as they sprout up but do not seem to bother with them once they leaf out.

Nice and thanks for the reply. I decided to put a fence around my backyard so they would have more than a 4X4 space to roam. I have 3 full size ones so more than likely they will still come across the Hostas eventually. Got any pics of yours?
