moving a young iguana

iggysgrannie Jun 25, 2007 06:13 AM

Hi,
My son and his so are moving to CO from CT the end of the week - June 29. Now it has been suggested we "mail" him with FEDEX or another over night group.

A couple of questions or more:Is this the best way?
Where do we buy a shipping crate? How is he fed? Food and water are important...and last but not least how do we make sure he's not left in the sun or get cold?

Thanks!

The only way to transport your animal, allowing it to have access to food and water, and to insure it isn't left out in the sun, is to personally transport it yourself.

Sorry. I am sure that is not what you wanted to hear. Any carrier, including Delta these days, will treat your animal like any other package, without taking any consideration to it being a live animal. You will need to package it with this in mind. Forget about food or water. Considering that it should only be shipped overnight, food and water isn't necessary anyway.

bsharrah, thank you for your information. And that is exactly what my son did. Iggie is now happy in his new home, learning to use kitty litter and growing like a weed. Shipping his pet seemed wrong particularly when they were driving in the heat...though the heat lamp was plugged in all the way. Thank you again for taking your time to respond to my question.

I hope you weren't talking about clay kitty litter. When he decides to eat that, it will be a huge vet expense and/or a dead iguana. I say when because he will. It would be very tempting for him.
I would even worry a bit about the pine-pellets. Pine is bad for most all pets, and pellets are bad when they are eaten, and iguanas are known for sampling everything.
