ringnecks overlooked

herpermike1 Jun 30, 2007 10:33 AM

I've never paid much attention to ringnecks so i don't know much about them. anyway was wondering about thier breeding behavior. specifically when they drop. reason is i found a few lately that seemed gravid for sure. are they egg layers? I've heard they can do either. I found one about 30 min ago and she is really swollen. especially mid body. you can feel three to four distinct lumps. kinda far up the body but didn't know. i was gonna keep her till she dropped to show my son if she is gravid then let them all go. any ideas? Thanx, Mike

that's kinda late for an egg layer huh? how long is the incubation? Will i need a nest box? kinda funny, would have to be like a bottle cap with moss in it! I've got three now that look to be gravid. also have two Dekayi's that are SUPER gravid!

Ringneck snake incubation times are very short compared to other colubrids.

I've had eggs hatch two-three weeks after they are laid. Normal hatch time is probably 30-45 days. Around there...

You don't need a nest box... They will lay the eggs anywhere. So you'll have to watch for them.

Eastern ringnecks were my very first snakes. I started catching them when I was about eight years old. That began my lifelong love of reptiles. It's good to see that others know about them. I was just wondering a couple of weeks ago if anyone ever keeps these. I've never seen or heard of anyone with them. I'd like to set up a small tank for one or two.

I saw my first ringnecks a couple days ago. They are Northerns and live along a streambed behind my bud's house. One of the best looking snakes here in NY.
