oid Jun 30, 2007 04:50 PM

Hey All,
Is anybody using any dry dog, cat, or other foods as the bulk, or as part of their Tegu's diet? Thanks! AT

ok not to be mean but dog and cat foods are made for dogs and cats not lizards. They use meal and parts of aniamls rather then whole animal. So raw diets can be used for tegus but never as the bulk. really mice and rats are the best way to go, and now a days it couldn't be easier there are so many companies that prices are low and if ur not happy with one place its easy to find a new one. I personally like to use supper worms as a stable along with mice, but eh to each their own.

But really dog and cat foods are not health for reptiles. if mice and rats and worms aren't good for u u can use ground turkey but even this is frowned apone.

I have not heard anything against using ground turkey before this thread, but I would not use dog and cat food. I would especially not use a dry food. It seems my tegus drink a lot of water and dry foods are dehydrating. Feeding animals is part of the expense of owning them. Frozen rodents can be found in bulk pretty inexpensively as opposed to pet stores. I feed ground turkey meatballs mixed with the proper quantity of vitamins and calcium, organ meats, chicken, fish, steak (if I'm eating it I just cut off a piece before I cook it and wash it thoroughly), as well as fresh fruits and veggies and frozen mice. I have about 30 animals and it gets expensive, but proper nutrition is the cornerstone to their health.

I used to give mine some dry.I would roll it across the kitchen floor so he could chase them. But it will give him diarrea if to much is given(meaning any size that would fill his belly).
I just used it as a treat now and again.Canned dog or cat food does the same...Even too much cooked chicken will make is poop runny. So raw it is for that guy...Its funny cause my Bluetongue can eat cooked meat or canned food without a problem..
