Feeder frogs vs. rodents.

somedude2 Jul 01, 2007 01:19 PM

Hi, I want to ask, which is healthier, feeding smaller frogs or rodents to my horned frog?

He currently refuses insects, and while I am trying to get him to eat them, I need to have him eat something else. He has been fed only rodents before I rescued him, and he will eat fish. However, feeder fish of appropriate size is hard to buy in my country. I can buy meal worms, crickets, rodents and frogs of different sizes. The frogs are being sold as feeder frogs, but I don't know if they are clean to be honest. But then again, neither do I know about the rodents or the insects.

But anyway, feeder frogs or rodents, which is lower in fat?

I would assume frogs would be better, as I have never seen any reptiles or amphibians get fatty livers or obesity problems on frogs, but animals fed exclusively rodents (when they are known to eat other things in the wild) often do have shorter lifespans and health problems. I would say to vary the diet. Why choose one, why not give an assortment of the foods you can acquire?
