size to age ratio?

iant Jul 02, 2007 07:59 PM

So I picked up my male dum at a show about a month ago. He is about four feet long, not sure of his weight. And alittle thinner then a pop can. The dealer told me he had picked it up from another, and he had raise it from a neonate, any way and educated guess on his age?

i think he may be about 5-6 years old. i may be a little off depending on the original owner's feeding schedule but this should be a good guess. if you're interested in this for breeding purposes, generally age doesnt matter; size is more important. start breeding at about 4' long.

Hey thanks! I have more familiar with the growth of pythons, which I always though kinda grew faster.

Our male Dum is just over 4 feet long, and not quite a coke can in thickness. He is 3 years old. He was a terrible eater when he was young, and eats once every 3 weeks in the winter, so I would expect some are larger at this age.

Can anyone really answer this All boas and pythons for that matter (and all animals really) have their own growth pattern. Your snake is nearing its adult size, but unless you have feeding records from the previous owner you can't say whether he was powerfed, or rarely fed, and therefore it is hard to say whether he is a bigger two year old, or a smaller 6 year old!
