sexing a tokay?

JoshHutto Jul 03, 2007 10:28 AM

First off let me say, tokays have to be one of the most beautiful geckos out there. I caught a large adult last night in an industrial park here in s. florida and decided to relocate it to my house. I really think I want to keep it and do have a 30g aquarium that I can house it in (it's not a tall tank but I think I can set it up nicely). My question is, how do you tell males from females? I would like to house a pair in there but need to know what I have first. Any help will be appreciated. Also this thing is gorgous. It has to be a release as it looks nothing like the old-school true wild caughts I use to see at shows.

The male will have quite noticable upsidedown V shape preanal pores right above the vent just like leopard geckos. You can see it on the female, too, but you have to really look hard to see them...they are tiny on females; it's very noticable in males, though, and if you run your finger on them on the males, you will feel little bumps; whereas, if you do it to the females, it feels smooth...no bumps.

You do not have to look really hard to see them. They are very present on females and it can sometimes be hard to tell males from females if you dont really know the difference. Males have really damn big pores that looks like a waxy substance in on them and females have smaller but still good sized pores. If you can post a pic up on here or email me and I'll see if I can help. A 29gal would be better than a 30 long they like lots of room to climb and if you want a pair a 29 would be perfect. I breed mine in one. Also females are ALOT smaller than males. Males have huge heads and thick bodys where females are smaller.

Thanks for the advice and help. With what you guys are saying I'm assuming it's a male but I'm posting pics so I can get your opinion as well.

The caging situation will be fixed as soon as Daytona comes around as I believe a top opening aquarium would be less than ideal for this guy. Hopefully the glass people that go to the shows will have a tall cage with the same footprint of a 30 as I would love to be able to use the stand that I built for the 30. However, in the meantime, what would you recommend as temporary climbing accessories and how soon should I try to offer food, I was thinking tomorrow?

Oh and BTW, they hurt like he!! when they bite you. He lunged from across the tank last night and got me on my thumb(blood was pouring for an hour).

Yup you gotta boy. And yes they hurt like hell when you get bit. . try not to do that lol. My male got ahold of me once and ripped me wide open. As for climbin wood or whatever. I'll show you a pic of the exo I keep my pair in. As long as he is healthy he'll eat tonight or tomarrow. I normally give a week before I feed to let them settle in but tokays are pigs. You need any help or anything feel free to email me.
