a few questions

teaspoon Jul 05, 2007 06:47 PM

I'd like to get a dumerils(but I havent' got the courage to ask my mom yet)and I've done some research but still have questions.
So from what I've read, adult dumerils need a large rat every other week? How often should a baby be fed?(smaller meals of course). Are dumerils very picky eaters?
For caging, a 20 gallon for a baby, but when its an adult, will a large plastic storage box work? I know rubermaid makes a 50 gallon storage thing that is about 43x21x18in. I would cut out the center of the lid and put in screen.
Will shredded paper work for a substrate?or would it be too dusty?
I don't know that I'll even be allowed to get a dumerils boa. But at least I'll be prepared, just in case.

Well I have found care sheets on the web to be few and far between, or they conflict alot of there info. My dum is about four foot and currently lives in a 36x18x18 critter cage. substrate I use a 50/50 mix of bed a beast and aspen. temps I keep mid to low 80's and feed A small rat after he cycles the previous one, which is about every other week. But I have only had him for about a month and im still learning a few things about dums to. Hopefully reptilicus81 will read these and help you out alittle more. She has more experiance with dum's then I and gave me some good tips. Best of luck to you.

hey im also a newbie at dums. i bought a nice pair about 5 months ago and i had alot of trouble with the female eating. she went 3 months without eating and not she eats like a champ. never had a problem with the male. as for encloser i have them seperate in 20 gallon long tanks with bed a beast as substrate and lots of hides as well and i feed them both a large mouse a week. hope this helps

I am happy to hear you are doing your research!

Here is my caresheet for dum's at my website(scroll down for dumeril's):

BTW: I would stick to aspen as far as a burrowing substrate it is much easier to clean as far as I'm concerned.
