Sulcata weight? another question for you

dawgcr Jul 09, 2007 01:00 PM

Now this Sulcata I have (which was sort of given to me/adopted) since I could tell her needed better care, is about 3.5 years old and I weighed him over the weekend and he is almost 4 pounds...and is bigger than the palm of my hand. I know he is under weight and small but please give me some ideas on how much he should weigh? 20 pounds? 15? 30?

hello
If the tortoise is smooth and healthy no worries
heat and diet are the control factors for growth in my opinion and if they are being covered then this is the size the tortoise should be
some grow really fast some are slower
focus more on a balanced diet and a cool habitat
size comes with age
doesn't matter in the end they all get huge
enjoy the youth
It doesn't last long and you will miss the times when moving the tortoise was easy.

Thanks Jeff, boy you have quite a bit of knowledge I see you all over this forum..and I think it's great.
He has just a slight case of pyramiding but nothing bad and out of control--very very slight case of it and I've noticed since he's been under the right light that it's already getting better. Now he's outside and on natural food so i'm curious to see how he starts to grow and develop.

Jeff--another question(and yes, you can send me the bill LOL)...50 which is the sulcata that is about 3.5 years old, well i noticed that he tries to ram my foot..if i'm back there sitting with him (and he's been around people his whole life and handled), he will walk up to my foot or leg and take a few quick steps and bump him shell up again my foot and tuck in..than do it again and push as hard as he can at the same time. I'm assuming this is his ramming behavior.

So i'm not sure how to respond to that. I simply pushed back on his shell as to ram him back a little..i certainly didn't push him over or throw him lol i just pushed back as to tell him "No you can't do that"...

Is he trying to establish dominance? Pecking order? Alpha? I'm thinking in terms of dog behavior here LOL
