Racer Eggs smell of mold???

KingCobra Jul 11, 2007 11:22 PM

Hi, I had a wild caught racer that layed eggs 3 days after my gopher snake layed her eggs. I put them in the same incubator and made sure they were all fertile, now, three weeks later, all of the racer eggs smell of mold and some even have a bit of fuzz grow on them.

I was wondering what I should do with them...I was told that they are pobably all dead, but wonder why??? None of the gopher snakes smell of or have mold on them. What could I have done wrong that all the racer eggs would die??

If anyone can help me out who has had experience with racer eggs, I would appreciate it a lot.

Thanks

Take this for what it's worth, but that egg looks good to me. Sometimes even if they get a little bit of fuzz on them, they are OK. Just wipe off the mold. Maybe move them into a different egg box with less humidity and see if that helps the mold situation too.

Again, FWIW, I would continue to incubate them until they are certifiably dead, i.e., they smell rotten or have turned colors or caved in. Reptile eggs in general are much tougher than most people give them credit for. Good luck!

Racer eggs like an acid substrate. If you use coconut husk they should not mold. Here is racer eggs in coconut husk. Molding is typical of racer eggs.

Thanks for the input guys. I am glad to know that they are probably all going to be ok.

I just candled some of them recently and there is a large dark mass(the embryo) growing in the eggs. I will let you all know when they hatch and post some pictures as well.

Thanks again!!
