Nice picture!!...he looks quite placid..did he try to bite??

regards Paul

because he was ice-cold. The high for the day was 67F, and the approximate air temperature when we found this guy was just about 65F and quite windy. He was very lethargic, as is typical when herps are cooled down. Moreover, this guy was in shed cycle with eyes completely blue! Yet no aggressive postures were taken at all. Quite a find, and a first for me with regard to racers.

Oh...I see.. I just presumed it was warm everywhere in the US this time of year.

No way. New York gets mighty hot as well as mighty cold, just like in New Jersey where we found this racer. The weather fluctuates fairly often, especially when one season changes to another. Here's a closer shot of that same snake.

Well Jerry"you just hit the nail on the head there" !!..question is I could only make a 2-3 week trip ,where would I go in order to maximize such a short time??...I've been looking into this for a while.
I'm interested in seeing :coachwhips,racers,copperheads,cottonmouths,ringtails,all crotalus,rosy boa's,rubber boa's etc..etc..
Where would it be best to go to and when???...LOL!!

Kind Regards Paul

I went to the pine barrens in tha late afternoon one day, and all I found was a very large eastern garter snake! I have yet to see a wild northern black racer.

I saw my first wild racer tihs past late June, as there was a southern black racer living under my hotel building! I saw him quite a few times, slowly moving thouh the bushes trying to find a skink for dinner.

Looks like my detective work sucks at first too! LMAO! Too funny. I visit the Pines fairly often between the months of April through October, and let me tell you, the garter snakes in the Pine Barrens are few and far between. My friend that I go with, who has been herpin' the pines for almost 4 decades, has seen few Eastern garters. The only one I've ever seen is the one in the attached pic, and I just missed this snake before it got run over by a vehicle. The truckers that barrel down the roads through the Pine Belt don't stop for anything. As Karl Kauffeld once stated about the Barrens, "no other place promises so much yet yields so little".

PS -- I'm in the black top. We are standing within the pygmy pine forest area.

...where in New Jersey is the Pygmy Pine forest? The closest woods to me are in Batsto. You know if there are any racers there?

absolutely correct. Near Cheesequake State Park. I venture all over in Ocean County, Burlington County, and others. Just too damn hot lately. I'm waiting for September to roll around before I take the long drive down there, as I'm from NY.
