Firebelly newt missing hand

aluringdr Jul 19, 2007 10:34 PM

I have 2 Chinese firebellies in a 10 gallon tank. Small Tetra micro-filter, water partially changed twice a week. Gravel and rocks cleaned every 2 weeks. I feed them frozen bloodworms every day. Problem I am having is that one is perfectly healthy while the other is missing a hand. (it wasn't missing the hand a day ago) Is there some precaution I should take to help him heal like give him his own tank for awhile? And why would the other one eat his hand? He seems pretty down and out, and I just want to make him better and not get picked on.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

could have gotton it stuck in the filter, or it's buddy could have eaten it. newts have absolutly horrible eyesight and if he saw it moving he could have lunged at it thinking it was food. i would take the filter out and put some aquatic plants in. newts arn't messy and they certainly don't need a filter and water changes that often. i have two heavily planted newt tanks and i haven't changed their water in like 8 months and it's sparkling. little guppies keep it clean too. good luck!
