I want a ringneck...where do I get one??

superdave1781 Jul 22, 2007 11:29 AM

hi all,
I just got the Sept. 2007 edition of REPTILES and they have an article on ringneck snakes. I really like the Monterey ringneck, and also the Regal and a few others for that matter! So where do you get one at? Does anyone breed and sell them? I did some searching (on google and on the kingsnake.com forums) and couldn't find anything about who sells them. I really would like to find a Monterey ringneck, can anyone help?

What's the article say?
I was gonna write a Ringneck article for REPTILES magazine last year but never got around to doing it.
Who wrote the article?

The article is called "Seeking the Ring-necked Snake" by Dick Bartlett. It's a typical "REPTILES" article with information about different species, range and behavior, and keeping info. It says they are hard to find in the pet trade and if you want one, you should collect it on your own, or set up a purchase or trade with a private hobbyist. We have ringnecks here in Virginia, and I am moving into a house with a crawlspace in about a month, and I'm sure I'll find some snakes under the house!! lol, but I really like the pics of the Monterey ringneck. Anyone know of anyone that breeds them?

I kept and bred ringnecks for the longest time...
Montereys are hard to find IMO.
I've had the majority of U.S. sub-species... Never a Monterey though.
They'd be tough to get out of CA legally...

that's a shame, they are very beautiful ringnecks! It sounds like they are rare...even more of a reason, if you ask me, to get them in the pet trade and get captive breeding programs going, before they vanish! Since you've kept many different ones, which do you think is the best overall? I like the ones with a bright red belly, are any of those sub species easy to keep? I've read in this forum that some are hard to get to eat because of specific diets that are hard to obtain; I'd prefer to at least start with a ringneck that has a simple and easy to get diet.

If you want something easy, go with the southern ringneck snakes. I've dealt with many of those, they are easy to keep, feed, and breed. They stay small, you'll be lucky to get one at 14", but they eat just about anything. I've had specimens that would take worms, fish, frogs, anoles, snakes and scented pinkies all in the course of a month or two.
