Caught 2 Brown snakes today

paulnola Jul 23, 2007 08:25 PM

I was mowing the grass this evening and caught 2 Brown snakes (either midland or northern) while cutting the grass. They were about 3 feet apart in very high St. Augustine grass. It was about 10 minutes apart. One was male, the other female, both about 12 inches long.
A few weeks ago, I caught another one in almost exactly the same location.
I was surprised to find 3 different snakes near the middle of the yard in the high grass when there is a huge compost heap as well as lots of rocks and logs to hide under close by.
I live in metro Atlanta, near Stone Mountain.

In some places you could probably find a dozen browns under 1 piece of cover.
They often hide together.

That's fun to read. I think they're midland - that's what I saw when I was in Atlanta, at least around the Grant Park and Emory U. area. I love those delicate little bars across the midlands' backs (follow the link below to see a northern with the unmarked back stripe) - my favorite subspecies.
