Albino Anole?

unusualanole Jul 25, 2007 08:34 AM

Can anyone tell me how rare an albino anole is? I am pretty sure it is an albino. He/she has red eyes and off white skin. It is a young anole not real small but I would not call it medium size. I posted 2 pictures. They are not that great of pictures because you can not tell the red eyes. I have had it for 2 days and tried feeding it very small crickets but it does not seem to be eating so I will probably let it go. I have searched the internet for the last 2 days to find information on them but all I found is someone saying it is impossible to have an albino anole due to anoles not having melanin. I have lived in FL for 17 years and I have tons of anoles and geckos around my house, I have never seen one this color or with red eyes. Any information would be appreciated. He/she has sparked my curiosity. Thanks

An albino would be very rare. Mainly, because they are an easy mark for predators. Keep it if you can and start a breeding program. If you don't want it, send me a message.

Believe it or not, I just saw two of these on my porch, red eyes and all. One was slightly larger than the other. I've never seen anything like them so I ran inside to get my camera and by the time I came back out they were gone. These anoles were much more skittish and skitted around the porch very quickly as soon as opened the door - much faster than the regular green and brown lizards that usually run around my yard in droves, perhaps accounting for how they've managed to stay alive to adulthood despite their coloration. Additionally, my house is a tan color, and they were very close in coloration to the house.

That anole looks a lot like the color of my new hatchlings...they are bright green, but they also are this pale greenish tan color, too, especially when they see the camera coming...

I guess only time will tell what yours will be!
