3 of my alligator lizard eggs have hatched - so other 11 should be out in next couple days.

I'll get pictures when more have hatched

Don't throw the shells away because I want to see what they look like.

What are you feeding them?

The shells really flatten out and crumple up. Snake eggs hold their shape much better.

I will be feeding them pinhead crickets that have been dusted (every 3rd feeding) with ReptiCal (with D3) and ReptiVite. I won't be doing the first feeding until they are all out, as they hatch with plump bellies.

5 are out, but only 7 eggs looked they haven't hatched - so it seems like 2 have burried themselves in the vermiculite ??

I keep mine in a Tupperware. Will there be enough air for them to breathe if they hatched while I am at work? I am thinking of taking the lid off. Will this dry the eggs out?

You also mention that you aren’t going to feed them until they are all hatched. Is this to make sure that the first out does not become the dominant of the gang?

How many days did yours take?

53 days.
Yours should be fine if they start to hatch while you are work.
Might want to take the lid off every few days to let fresh air in.

I'm not going to feed them till they all are out because they will all be housed together so it makes more sense to me to wait - they have plump bellies from the yolk sac.

They will all hatch within a few days of each other.

What size of aquarium are you housing them in? I remember you mention before that you will be using wood chips for the substrate.

I have a un-used 20 long so that's what I'll be using.
I actually need to order wood chips (sani chips from LLL) so I'm going to be using coconut fiber initially, just making darned sure it isn't too wet.

When yours hatched, did you take the first 3 out and place the lid back on?

My Tupperware is about 4 inches deep and 2.5 inches of it is coconut fiber already. The dimension is about 7x7 inches. I am still concern that they might run out of oxygen if they hatched.

Would it be ideal to poke holes in the lid or will this dry the shells out?

Your eggs are using oxygen even right now. Eggs absorb oxygen and exhaust CO2.

I did take them out as they hatched.

You can poke a few holes if you want, but make them very small holes and check the dampness of the medium.

I use saran wrap over the eggs held on by rubber band - and two weeks ago, I noticed that I had not properly put the rubber band on, there was saran wrap edge not under it resulting in a path for humidity to escape. It stayed humid enough though, so a few small holes for air exchange shouldn't pose a problem.

Nice!

That came out of those eggs? How did they fit in the shells in the first place?

The colors will change right?

What is the substrate that you are using again?

It's amazing what will fit in the eggs.

Yes - the colour will change - fairly rapidly actually.

Right now they are not coconut fiber (vermiculite in the pictures) as I have to order more chips (sani-chips from LLL) with moss.

ReptiCal = Calcium
ReptiVite = Vitamin

Right?

FunkyRes Jul 27, 2007 04:46 AM

Yeah.
They need the kind of calcium that has Vitamin D3. Some reptile calcium doesn't.
