I think I'm ready...

breaker Jul 27, 2007 12:06 AM

Tomorrow my frilled dragon will be ready for me to take home. She will be three and a half month old. I have a 40 gallon tank, branches, fake plants, a basking spot that reaches 95, cool side that reaches 80, a uvb bulb, small crickets (currently gutloading), Rep cal- calcium with vitamin d3, and a multivitamin supplement. Humidity stays between 55 and 65, pretty much everything is set, but I have a few worries. Will the tank be too big for the frilly to catch its food? Should I not be using repti-bark this early, I see all the care sheets say its good for an adult but is 3 and a half months too early for that... maybe newspaper instead? Also what should I do if the frilled lizard is spooked and doesnt want to eat or drink-- would putting newspaper around the tank so she feels more isolated be approptiate? Ive read almost all the care sheets and they dont seem to answer some of the more specific answers, and how long can I keep her in the 40 gallon tank. I see some sheets say that juvs should be moved to the 3x3x4, while others say adults only. Please help, kinda lost on the important stuff.
Thanks!

yea 40 gallon will do fine for now but feed it a lot and it will out grow it quickly. bark is ok but at its age it is still best to use news paper... its easy for the little guy/girl to catch its food.
good luck with it and keep us up to date!!!

I wouldnt use bark; I never do even for my adults. Sand is what I use; but for babies I use newspaper. I dont care how pretty my cages are; just how well they work. I ouls also adda shallow dish for water and change it daily or twice daily. I offer worms 24/7 and crix 5 timesweekly. If your frill is having problems catching food, then pinch the crix back legs off. Tehy will still move, but much slower.
Hope thrives for you!!!
cheers,
miz

Well its day three and things are going well. Everything is going fine expect for her catching food, so I came up with an idea... Make half the cage newspaper, and have it empty, with the other half kept with the wild setting (bark and such). I feed her in the newspaper section because the crickets have nowhere to hide and its working out pretty well, she eats about 5-8 crickets at a time about twice a day, and almost none get away. I tried mealworms, but she only nips at them as if she doesnt know they are supposed to be food cuz they barely move.
