It is certainly possible. All the range maps I have seen for Oklahoma show the western cottonmouth range covering about the eastern third of the state, with range extending to or into Tulsa County.
thanks i no a lake that has parts were people probaly havent been there for 10 plus years and theres lots of frogs should i expect cottons there?
Well, who can say? Go take a look! My experience is that when a location is close to the boundary between ranges where a species is kown to exist and where it is not, it's pretty much the luck of the draw . . . sometimes they're there, and sometimes not. Just be aware that if you ask someone who doesn't really know snakes, they'll inevitably tell you that sure there are cottonmouths all over, since very few people can tell the difference between a cottonmouth and the various Nerodia species of non-venomous water snakes common to Oklahoma.
ok and people confusing water snakes for cottons gets anoying
I have never seen one in Tulsa County. Doesn't mean they aren't there though.
I have crisscrossed Mohawk park looking for one and I find a lot of Nerodia (Water Snakes) but no Cottonmouth (Agkistrodon).
To the east I have seen Copperheads (Cherokee County) and there are supposed to be Timber Rattlers there.
In the Southern part of Tulsa County there are supposed to be rattlesnakes, both Timbers and Pygmy's but I have PERSONALLY never seen any. Many at the Tulsa Herp Club have though! Come out to one of our meetings soon. We meet the first Thursday of the month at the zoo!
I have talked to many Okmulgee residents who have seen Pygmy rattlesnakes.
