New behavior in Eastern Diamondbacks?

e&t Jul 30, 2007 11:38 AM

I used to have a few eastern diamondbacks rattlesnakes in my collection, and I think I witnessed a behavior in them that was not seen before. Whenever I would mist them with a spray bottle, they would channel the water to their mouth by flexing their venom glands into a sort of funnel shape which led the water directly into their mouth.

Very cool finding!

Many snakes do this. Though I cant say for sure weather or not its been recorded in Crotalus I have definately seen it in Atheris, Bothrechis, bitis and Agkistrodon. This seems to be one of the major factors for having keeled scales.

definately an interesting observation.

Heh, yeah. I loved to watch her do it. I would spray her down two or three times a day just to watch her do it. It was really amazing.

Pretty much all of my Crotes will do this when sprayed, as well as pretty much anyone else I spray in my collection.
