Yay! New driftwood!

e&t Aug 05, 2007 11:11 PM

Ok, I went to a creek way out in the country a few hours ago, and I picked out a lot of new driftwood. I cleaned it all with the hose, and I'm gonna leave it all out all day tomorrow on the porch to dry. It's some of the most amazing looking driftwood I've ever seen. Quite a bit of it was a root structure that was submerged...got kinda dirty diggin it out. I'm hopin' the setups I use this wood in look good enough to be worth all the work I put into this. I probably got about 100 pounds of wood, and had to make 3 or 4 trips from way upstream in the creek to the car to get it all. I thought bringin a couple pillowcases would be enough to carry it al...I was wrong. The entire back of out Trailblazer was full of driftwood. That's two rows of seats plus a trunk thing. By the time I got home, I was covered in mud, dirt, water, sand, wood chunks that broke off, leaves, and more mud. But, if you could see this wood, you'd know it was worth it. This driftwood is NICE!!! I got a little carried away, but who cares, now I'll have a little extra...er, a lot extra. I'll be able to set up a killer dart frog tank, and I'll prolly have enough to do a background too. And I'll still have A LOT left. So, now I have pretty much everything I need BUT a tank...weird. I'll have an extra tank pretty soon, and then I'll FINALLY be able to set up a dart frog tank!

Uhm, this would be where you give us some pictures of your glorious wood. Hop to it!

What kind of wood is it? Hopefully cypress.

Whatever your drift wood, the root structures are best to use, if you can identify them, which obviously you can. If it's any kind of hard wood, or swamp cypress type, you are perfectly safe with it. Other conifers like pines and firs may be disappointing, because they may deteriorate rapidly, and the branches may still contain some turpenoids, although as well-washed drift wood, I doubt this would be a major problem for keeping dart frogs. Don't sanitize them too much, because you don't want to destroy all of the microorganisms and tiny insects they may add to a tank, as well as moss spores and and mushroom surprises. There aren't a lot of dart frog pathogens that you could possibly introduce by simply adding your drift wood from a temperate zone creek. They aren't going to pick up any new parasites or pathogenic bacteria from this. Go for it, and send us some photos.

Well, I'm pretty sure the root sructures are cypress, but I'm not sure. I'll figure it out though. The rest of the wood I'm not really sure about, but I'll figure it out too. It shouldn't take too much research. Also, about the pictures well, that I'm not sure about either. I'll get some pics on here when we get out camera fixed. Shouldn't be too long. A week at the most, but probably sooner.

Ok, I researched it and I'm pretty sure it's not cypress, since cypress doesn't grow around here. I think it's really oak, or maybe hardwood pine, or something like that...I'm not very good at identifying trees though.

pics don't work

e&t Aug 08, 2007 04:01 PM

Crap. Well, does anyone now how to post pics? If so, tell me how, and I'll try to get them on here again.

Slaytonp Aug 08, 2007 08:57 PM

The easiest way is to first upload them from your computer images program on the Kingsnake picture gallery, which is free for the first 10MB. Then you can just select up to three of them from the "Photos" where they will be listed at the bottom of your response screen once you have uploaded them to the gallery. You can select up to three by pressing down the control button.

Go to the top of this page and click on the tab that says "Photos". Then download your pix into a free kingsnake.com photo site, following the instructions. You might have to reduce your resolution and the size, but it is easy. Then whenever you post, you will have a dropdown menu at the bottom to choose which pix you want to use. If your photo gallery gets full, you have two options. You can either pay for more storage here or you can delete some of your older photos. But if you delete them, whenever anyone clicks on your posts that have those deleted photos in them, the old pix will not show up.

Ok, here are the pics, they're prolly real fuzzy, but here you go. The first is the all the wood together, the next pic is the root structure. Hope you like them!
