New HL owner, needs just quick advice

simplyhoney Aug 05, 2007 11:17 PM

I bought a HL at a garage sale about a month ago. He or she, don't know how to tell, eat like a monster. First question:

1. Can I over feed it? I have been feeding it a couple of very large grass hoppers every other day and about 15-20 harverster ants inbetween, along with the occasional cricket and even a small dragon fly. This thing wil eat anything that moves. one of the grass hoppers was as long as the lizard, He got er down.

2. Does a regular incondesant light bulb (100w) provide proper UV. I had it in a window and it loved putting it's front legs on the glass and sunbathing. i have a hot rock and the light bulb.

3. Moisture, any special requirements?

thanks,
newbee

Be careful feeding large insects. I had one choke to death on a large cricket. I'd not test it's abilities.

A regular bulb will do no good and will eventually cause your lizards death. You need a good UV bulb like a ZooMed PowerSun.

Provide a shallow dish that he can easily get in and out of. You can also use an eye dropper and place a drop on his snout. Give him more as he starts drinking. A couple of times a week should be good. Check out phrynosoma.org for more care info.
Good luck
