Hello, I am trying to figure out the best way to accurately measure hatchling northern ringneck snakes (snout to vent length) without injuring them. This is for a scientific study. Any tips?
Thank you

Just hold them next to a ruler... Grab their neck and the last part of their tail... I'm not gonna tell you to stretch them out. But if you're gonna get an accurate measurement that's basically what you'll have to do.

I was considering trying out the "serpwidgets" application, but maybe they would be too small for that?
consider buying a piece of aluminum "L" channel and putting markings on it every cm, inch or whatever you prefer, then put the snake on the channel and it may/should slither down the channel in a straight line, i think, i use a wall for my adult corns and they tend to follow the straight line, makes life a bit easier. Best of luck

All of that is really too complicating for what is only a 4 inch snake.
It'll be a lot easier on yourself if you just hold it out against a ruler.

Photocopy them, lay a string out on the photocopy of the animal, and then measure the string.
