My Candoia carinata carinata

buggirlforever Aug 08, 2007 05:02 PM

This girl has quite a story.

I bought her as a "solomon island ground boa" at a show back in January of 2005. I knew she was wild caught, thought she was just a baby. She was supposed to be eating pinkies. Well, she went 8 months of being stubborn (I tried everything imaginable) until she ate a treefrog. Since then she got about one treefrog per month. Four weeks ago I FINALLY got her to take f/t pinkies. And by now it's quite obvious she's an adult since she hasnt grown at all, and I've been told she's a pacific tree boa.

Her name is Mystique, or Misty for short. She's a pretty cool snake but gives me lots of headaches, heh. She's always been very skinny (may not look it curled around my hand in the pics, but stretched out, its scary how thin she is).

So here are some pics of her I hope someday to get her a boyfriend and see if I could raise up some captive bred specimens, I don't like taking things from the wild. But these are simply awesome, small snakes.

Yeah carinata are awsome snakes to work with. You are correct, she's skinny! You may want to offer her frogs more often than once monthly. She would probably eat 1-2 a wek, no problem. Did you try anolis or house geckos? They might be easier to obtain versus frogs, depending on where you're located. Just some friendly tips.

The reason she wasnt fed very often was that it was tough to find treefrogs! Pet stores didn't always have them when I needed them, and they were often the wrong size. And I read they have a slow metabolism anyway, I still felt bad though.

However she's been eating f/t pinkies every week now in an effort to get her to fatten up, she finally stopped being stubborn.

HAS SHE SHED SINCE YOU GOT HER??....SHE LOOKS LIKE SHES IN A DRY SHED....SHE WILL LOOK LIKE A DIFFERENT SNAKE WHEN SHE SHEDS....MIST HER AND KEEP HER VERY MOIST WHEN SHEDDING IS DUE......JC

She had actually just finished shedding before I took those pictures (I had to help her, she was having a tough time even though I kept the humidity up). She's looking better every day now that she's eating more consistently.
