Feeding a Juvenile Eastern Racer

tulsaherper Aug 09, 2007 10:46 PM

rescued him from a glue trap at my warehouse. I have given him appropriate sized crickets and he won't take them. I am not an expert on Racers but I have heard that they do eat a lot of insects.

Any ideas? This is my first racer and I am guessing he won't eat for awhile due to stress?

I have a juvenile racer myself and tried crickets with the same result, he wouldn't even look at the things but he could eat small lizards by the truckload.
So try some small lizards or maybe some minnows?
Think about where you found it and what it would probably eat around there, the surroundings it originally lived in could give a huge clue as to what it likes/is used to eating.
Good luck.

The lizards that this guy would eat around here would be skinks. It's about all you ever see.

Do they sell feeder anoles?

Or is that a horrible idea?

First captive racer , let me know.

There's no harm in asking I guess, what I did was buy a butterfly net and went lizard hunting in the backyard. I found my racer there so I figured the ones I catch to feed him would have had the same fate regardless.

So maybe just go catch a few skinks or anything small that you know he'd normally eat then once he gets a little bigger (or if he's already big enough) you can start with pinkie mice.

I've given my racer it's first pinkie today and he didn't go for it but, given a lizard he had no hesitation to gobble it up. Try different things they're known to eat is the best way, in my opinion, once it eats a pink then you can just go and buy them but going out and hunting down food for it seems much more committed.. or crazy. As long as baby eats, all is right with the world.
