This gecko jumped out of my camera bag..

aero_tiff Aug 16, 2007 04:17 PM

...and it scared the crap out of me, I think the last thing I expected was a baby gecko to leap out of my camera bag and onto my computer. I chased it around for a while, and it's housed in my tiny plastic container until I determine if it came from outside and will survive if I put it back out there.
I'm down in Miami, I'm sure it came from outside but... it doesn't look like any of the geckos we have around here. Justin says it looks tokay shaped, and we do have invasive tokays here. Well, it's up to you guys now, I'll post this message in the Gecko Forum also. S/he is only about 1.5" long!! So CUUUUUTE...
Thanks all,
~Tiff

It looks like a Tropical House Gecko to me, Hemidactylus mabouia. There are two color morphs that I'm aware of, this would be the darker one. My grandparents moved up here from Florida about a year ago and one about an inch long hopped out of their tool box while they were unpacking. Cute little bugger -- hard to keep food for it though, if you buy too many pinheads, they grow too large for the damn thing before you can feed them to it! They do get much larger though. I believe they originate from Africa...

Hey thanks for the info! I happen to have 2 g. marginata (both female) so when this teeny, similar looking gecko jumped out of my bag I thought "oh NO....unforseen babies!!" (of all places to hide in my apartment, a tiny camera case on my desk by no windows or doors seemed peculiar). Thank goodness it's just a stowaway. We have tons of invasive species down here, I'm not surprised this guy hails from Africa. Anywho, I was at the Daytona show today and got 500 PH crix from Ghann's, we'll see how he likes those, though theorically I could put him back outside... he's just so tiny, I don't want to see him get eaten. Oh well, he can join the clan. :D Thanks so much!

well good luck with it. Mine, unfortunately, got eaten by a wolf spider that somehow made it into the tank... no idea how it got in there

Hello
I agree. I have hatched several H. mabouia and the one in the photo looks just like the babies I've hatched.
Have A Great Day!!!
