Shenandoah Salamander (Plethodon shenandoah)

what a stunning salamander! Just curious, was that a captive specimen or a wild one? If it was wild then congratulations on the find -- those things are pretty rare. Was it found in its known habitat or did you pick it up somewhere new? If so then double congrats
Thanks! The salamander was photographed and released in it's known habitat. I don't think one could (or should) keep a captive specimen due to the fact that they're listed as an endangered species.
Below is another pic showing 3 Shenandoah salamanders, a P. cinereus in the top middle and what is thought to be a P. Shenandoah x P. cinereus hybrid on the bottom. The hybrid has features consistent with both species but the DNA is still out.

yeah, I didn't think it would be captive but somewhere out there people have things far more rare and it's rather unfortunate. I wasn't aware of hybrids but since I don't live anywhere near that species I had never taken the time to read up on it and none of the local books have reason to mention it in their cinereus descriptions. Anyway, really nice pictures!
