Hello all,
This is my first post. I have 2 red tail boa constrictors, a male and a female, who are approximately 13 years old. They have bred successfully 3 times in the past, every 2-3years. I was shocked last week to find that my female had given birth too 24 boas. I am pretty sure that I found them within an hour or 2 after birth although it may have been as long as 12 hours. Most were still in the sack and appeared to have made no effort to break out. I quickly removed them and cleaned them off in warm water, trying to stimulate them. Nonetheless, most were already dead and the few that were still barely alive died shortly thereafter. I am sad and confused as to what happened. Most of the babies seemed perfectly formed and of normal size. Can anyone give me any idea as to what could have caused this? My female has had 3 normal births of anywhere from 14-18 live babies in the past. The only difference between now and then is that the pair are in a smaller enclosure than previously. I moved to the Cinti area last year and had to do away with the giant terrarium on wheels that I used to keep them in. Nonetheless, their new home is in my opinion large enough for the pair to live comfortably. I have always housed the pair together. I also find it strange that she gave birth in August in contrast to her usual spring birth. I am eager to hear everyone's thoughts. Thanks. Melissa
