Mixing two different species ...........

iced_urth Aug 29, 2007 09:42 PM

I have a red eye litter frog (leptobrachium hendricksoni) and a malaysian chubby frog (K. pulchra). I'm wondering whether I can keep them in the same tank or not. I've heard all the reasons why mixing species is a bad idea, but according to what I've read these frogs can be found in the same areas with the same temperature, humidity etc. Both of my frogs are imported. There isn't a great difference between their sizes. I'm just wondering if anyone has any experience doing this with these species in particular. Until then I'm just gonna play it safe and keep them separate. But I'd appreciate any info that anybody can give.

I don't know specifically about these two species but if they require the same care and are both large enough to not be eaten by the other then I would guess it shouldn't be a problem. You'll probably want a better answer than that though. Some species of amphibians have toxins in their skin that may be harmful to other species. I've heard stories of Gray Treefrogs being stored for a few minutes in a bucket on a rainy night with a few other species during a night time road search -- all the non-gray treefrogs died most likely due to toxins excreted from the grays. That's just an example of things that might not be predictable. If someone doesn't answer your question regarding your two species here you might want to check out a vivarium forum as many people keeping vivariums have experience in what species can and cannot be mixed together

no, dont' mix species.

if they are imported that means they both have parasites, so if not treated they could die. if you do put them together (and i highly suggest you don't) at the very least quarentine them both and get a facal sample done and treat them.

For a while, the idea of having them in the same tank appealed to me because it would give me more space. But I just decided to keep them permanently in separate setups.

yeah, good idea.
