SRX Sep 10, 2007 04:09 PM

What species is this, B.americanus or B.fowleri?

Based on the stripe down the back, I'm guessing Fowler's.

where did you find it? fowlers are in the south only.

Range - Lake Michigan east through most of Pennsylvania to se. New York and s. New England, south to the Gulf coast (excluding coastal South Carolina and Georgia, and most of Florida), west to e. Texas and north to Missouri and s. Illinois

I believe that Fowler's are found in other places than just the south. These are in Central Mass.

looks like an american toad to me. im pretty sure the fowlers have more distinct markings, like three brown warts on their back that are darker and larger than the american toads, i could be wrong though. either way, you care for them the same way...

It looks to me like an American

On the back there are black spots that have brown bumps on them. American toads tend to have 1-2 larger bumps per black spot while Fowler's tend to have 3-5. What color is the belly? American Toads usuall have a bunch of black/gray spots on their belly while Fowler's Toads have a clean belly and perhaps a single spot in the middle. Carefull -- they hybridize

Habitat can also be used but only as a rule of thumb. A toad found on a sandy beach or sandy something else is OFTEN a Fowler's Toad. Toads found in forests could be either.

its american i have one that looks identical to it

I agree. The number of warts in the black spots is the definitive way to differentiate American toads from Fowler's. That looks like an American to me.

American toads had spotted bellies and Fowlers have a unspotted belly. Also, the parotoid gland touches the cranial ridge behind the eye in Fowlers.
