Non-native stray from animal shelter

It looks to me like a false map turtle, Graptemys pseudogeographica
It could be some other sort of map turtle though -- so many of them look alike to me...

what makes you sure it's non-native?

because the only turtle native to this area is the western pond turtle. Its not one of those, obviously, thus not native

ok -- not native then. I still say it's a map turtle and am inclined to call it a False Map Turtle but again -- my only experience is with the Northern Map Turtle so all I'm really going on is that it looks like one of those but different

That is definitely a Mississippi Map Turtle (Graptemys pseudogeographica kohnii), a ubspecies of the False Map Turtle; it is common in the southern parts of the Mississippi drainage.
