Sundival glass skink?

Uromas21 Sep 12, 2007 08:59 PM

We've had a pair of these guys at the store I work at for nearly a year. A few weeks ago I found eggs while cleaning out the terrarium. Store policy is to throw them out, but they looked like they were well on their way, so home they went with me. There were 4 eggs in total. After a couple weeks at room temperature, one of the eggs hatched! Unfortunately, the baby had died before completely emerging (I found it dead).

ABOVE: The dead one..

About a week later, the second eggs went moldy. Two weeks later (today), I found the remaining two eggs shrivelled up, and 2 little guys just over an inch long burried in the substrate in the deli cup!

They are absolutely adorable. My question is - what species are they (latin name)? I cannot find ANY information on the anywhere. I now have the parents, and have set up the terrarium in the same manner in which they have been living for the past year.

Anyone have any ideas? the parents look almost identitical to the little ones. I can try and take pics of them if the baby pictures won't do.

Thanks,
Cory

No idea.. but interesting story. I'm guessing you have them in seperate tanks from the parents, right? I think a lot of species may possibly eat their young... but maybe not.

I've heard of glass lizards, but most of them don't have legs and the ones that do have legs that are really small and stubby. I don't know... I'm not an expert by any means, just curious as to what you've got.

Maybe they got the name wrong or mispelled or something... you try asking whoever put the name on the tank to begin with? It could be a name that is used less frequently for its actual more common name. *shrug* Good luck...

Yes, they are separate from the parents. I have them in a 5.5gal aquarium... small enough that they should have trouble catching pinhead crickets.

This is what puzzled me. When I started researching them all the pics of glass lizards had no legs. The parents have even smaller legs in comparison to the body than do the babies.

I remember when they came, I've worked there forever... that's the common name they came in with. I tried to go through the invoices, but they don't go back that far unfortunately...

I'll definitely post on the other site though, I'd really love to find out more about these guys. They are very entertaining... although I don't see them too much.

Well, I'll be reading to see what you find out. I recently caught a pair of juvenile Great Plains Skinks (it took me a while to identify them because the juveniles look completely different from adults) and they like to burrow a lot as well... but I'm starting to see them more now that they are adapting to their new home.

Anyway... you might try searching through the list of different 'glass lizard' species on Wikipedia... there appears to be quite a few. I'm not sure you'll have any luck there but that's where I saw a list of lots of different 'glass lizards'... and I think some of them have legs. Later...

Oh, sorry for the double-post but I forgot... if you don't have any luck here, try going to RepticZone and posting pics and asking folks there. There may be someone there that knows.
