Tortoises and Impaction

aquakej Sep 14, 2007 11:05 AM

Hello,

My boyfriend has a young sulcata tortoise and we saw him eat a big rock the other day. The rock was nearly the size of a lima bean, and the tortoise is only about 5 inches long. We're worried he might become impacted by it. Is there anything we can do to prevent this from occuring? Should we be feeding the tortoise right now, or would that make matters worse?
He swallowed the rock three or four days ago, and hasn't eaten a whole lot since. We also haven't seen him poo. Otherwise, he is acting normally enough. Any help would be appreciated!

Try canned pumpkin pie filling that has nothing added to it. Some of them have sugar & stuff added but some cans of it are pumpkin only.
It's very high in fiber, it's not harmful to a sulcata & it can help make that rock pass on through in a few days.
If it doesn't work ask a vet about lactulose. My vet has been prescribing it to several people for impaction. You need a vet to prescribe this & give you the correct dose for it.
I have a box turtle who swallowed small pebbles in the outdoor pen this summer & she did get impacted. The vet prescribed this stuff & it worked.
