Feeding hatchling Rhino rats......

erikm Sep 18, 2007 10:52 AM

Could those of you that keep this awesome species describe to me how you get your hatchlings to feed on live or f/t pinks? I have a large group of well started CB hatchlings that I will be feeding for the first time today and I'd like to have some opinions on the best way to feed them

we offer live pinks in the cage, works 85% of the time.

you can also try cupping them, putting the pink and the snake into a deli cup together, lid on, inside the cage. be sure there are air holes, of course, and try just putting a live pink in the cage overnight first.

Thanks Robyn.

I have left a pink in each of their bins and the lights are out. I have my fingers crossed! :D

If that fails I will try putting them in deli cups in a few days.

Got 2 out of 4 to feed last night...

Here is what I did:

Took the hatchling out onto my hand and offered a pink head on hemostats. Hatchlings struck many times and finally after 4-5 strikes they nailed it and swallowed it pretty quick. Lots of work but it paid off! Seems they don't like larger prey... right now at least. I tried offering a full pink and they start to swallow but then soon spit it out.

glad to hear that you have had some progress. we definitely hand pick pinks to get the youngest, smallest ones, but i have never had to chop them up or feed less than a full one...

My hatchlings could definitely take a decent sized pink.... I guess they are just picky? I got another female to take a pink head... next time I will try full size pinks :D

I am on your waiting list for hatchlings... going to have pairs available anytime soon? :D
