Little bugs crawling on my tree frogs!

dracaena828 Sep 18, 2007 09:07 PM

Hi all~

I have kept reptiles for many years but am new to frogs. This spring I caught a few tadpoles and raised them up to little frogs. I've identified them as Pacific tree frogs and just love the little guys - they're awesome! I have five and they range from a bit smaller than a centimeter to about 3/4 of an inch.

I haven't really had any problems with them except having to separate the littlest ones for awhile because they weren't getting enought to eat while in with their bigger companions. Today however while feeding them I noticed that there were miniscule little whitish bugs crawling on the back of my smallest frog. I looked closely at all the others and discovered all of them have these tiny creatures on them. What are they? I suppose this doesn't matter so much as how do I get rid of them?? I know frogs are really sensitive animals, so what kind of product is safe to use with them to get rid of pests? I know with snakes you put them in a really clean tanks with paper towels or something as substrate until the pests are gone, but how do you do this with tree frogs? Help! Any advice is much appreciated, thanks.

Angela

when you say little, do you mean microscopic if you don't have 20/20 vision? or half of a fruit fly little? i'm guessing they are mites or springtails. i wouldn't use any product until you find out what it is. don't buy anything from petco/petsmart... they do nothing. they have vitimans and junk, but nothing to get rid of mites. if they are springtails just wash them off and clean the tank. if they are mites go to the vets and they will tell you what to do. springtails move a lot faster and have an elongated bottom, mites are more like little spiders and they are slower and much smaller.
