Mixed tank... Beginers please read.

dan w. Sep 25, 2007 01:15 AM

I was just reading some of the posts here on the subject and thought I would give an actual experience of mine. I guess my example would be more of crowding but the same applies to mixing because of the stress it puts on the animal. I have a custom built tank that is 9 cubic feet in space so that would be about 40 -50 gal?? I have kept only two Whites tree frogs in this tank One of them passed away after about 3-4 years old. It developed those light green dots and died. The other frog started getting those same dots but after another four years of having the tank all to himself the dots are long gone and he is doing fine now. So this frog is now seven years old and seems happy and sometimes I get to him call out. So to the people that reply to posts about crowding /mixing and state "everything must be fine because I have kept them like that for six months now" , is baloney. Do you think 3 plus years for a frog that should live more than 10 years is a success, I dont believe so. And the symtoms of the other frog disappeared when he no longer had to share his space that I thought would have been plenty for two. Reptiles and amphibians are not social creatures, they don't need a buddy and especially of another species.

i like the point you are making, and you are right, herps arn't social, at all and they like to have as much space as possible. however, i don't think that the reason your frog died is becasue it wasn't in a big enough tank. and i'm also not sure those green dots had anything to do with it. i coulc be completely wrong though. but other than not being in a big enough tank and green dots killed your frog, what was the more scientific reason for it dieing. cause 40-50 gallons is plenty for 2 whites. i know tons of ppl. that have kept them for 10 years in a 10 or 15 gallon tank.

I dont know the bright green spots is something that was happening a lot and being talked about on this forum about 5 years ago. It seems like most of the frogs that developed them were dying. So when i saw this on my frog i assumed it was the same thing. And i didnt change anything in the tank for the other frog and the spots went away.

i just joined 2 years ago so i don't know, but thats weird. i remember my frog got that and it just dissappeared one day. he got it when he was under his heat lamp. do u know if there was any other symptoms? i had a frog die of colored spots, but that was hemoraging which is probably something differnt.

There were no other symptons that I noticed. Neon green spots is all. they both had parasites when I got them from the pet store they were very young then and that was cleared up.

Nice and plump frog you have there. I keep mine on the thin side he is also male and they are generally smaller anyway. My tank is about 3 feet high. I have cork bark slabs running up and down the back of the tank which he hides behind during the day. I dont have any plants in it just coconut fiber floor and a water dish for a night soak. I keep the tank totally dry never misted. Have kept this way for most of his 7 years. I will have had him 8 years in December I believe.

thats odd about the spots. my frogs are in a similar size tank for two boys. waterdish, enormous snake plant and orchid moss. i mist them a few times a week, they always call right after i mist them, it's neat. or when i vacuum or have loud music. they seem to like to be misted. they get really active and start calling and eating. just checked 4 parasites and they had worms, but they are all gone now and thier color is way better.
