Florida redbelly snake

tnz Sep 27, 2007 08:13 AM

Hello,

I´m from Germany and I have a feeding problem with a wildcaught Florida redbelly snake (Storeria occipitimulata obscura).
I have offered earthworms (Dendrobena), trouths, grasshoppers and crickets, but the snake does not eat.
Can anybody tell me which kind of feeding animals I can try, too?

They eat small slugs not earth worms and it appears they are sometimes picky and sometimes won't eat anything but small slugs. I had one recently and put in worms and had the same issue but it passed on worms for a couple of weeks but then devoured small slugs. I don't what kind of slug but small brown/black slugs I collected under rotting logs. Good Luck as they are beautiful snakes.

Try small slugs or small snails

Thank you very much for the immediate replies.
I´m sorry for the long waiting time of my answer, but my english isn´t so good. In order to give an answer, I should wait for my wife
I have tried slugs and snails now. I can´t say for sure, whether the snake has eaten something, but the weight is ok (hasn´t lose weight) and he is looking well.
I suppose the snake prepares itself for hibernating. So actually I´m not shure whether I should better hibernate the snake.

if from Florida I wouldnt think it would hibernate but either way you can use some type bowl, etc to keep slugs in which snake can get to this will help you see if they are being eaten.

I have had a FL redbelly going on 6 years now. He will only eat slugs. Prefers the small brown ones, but will eat the bigger black ones if I cut them in half length ways.

Thank you very much for your help. The snake has eaten the slugs, after I had cut them.

A few days ago, I have seen that my redbelly was taking an earthworm. I haven´t seriously tried to feed the snake with eartworms, after you´ve told me, that this would´nt function.
But I must have forget some worms inside the box.
