Tiger salamanders bred in Japan???

Blecha Oct 03, 2007 09:14 PM

I've heard mention on here a few times about tiger salamanders being bred in Japan, does anyone have a link to the article or know where this rumor came from?

About 7 or 8 years ago I had a bunch of wild caught tiger salamanders outside my house in a large horse trough and managed to get eggs and larvae. Unfortunately I went off to summer camp and my parents made the mistake of spraying their horses for flys right next the trough and I had to come home to find out all of my salamanders and their larvae died... I have always had a passion for these amazing animals and a long time goal of mine has been to breed them in captivity.

So actually you have sucessfully bred them in captivity, just not raised to second generation, and nor was it published, hummmm that sounds promising.
Thanks
Jeff

Technically yes, but I was a kid and didn't document anything because I didn't know they weren't bred in captivity. BUT, it gives me the motivation to try again and make sure to document everything along the way... Easier said than done I am sure, wish me luck.

Good luck to you and wish my luck too, I'm going to give it a try too, I think the key might be to have them outside in seudo-natural conditions in the early spring with a small outdoor pond free and protected from preditors.

Yeah, I have several ideas on what triggers them and am going to try several different methods with different groups. I think it depends where the salamanders are from too. I'm sure brumation is important, along with rain... I'm kind of thinking they need a "dry spell" of sorts too... Even if they never breed, it's a fun project. Best of luck to us both!
