Male or Female? -we are new here-

haleakala Oct 07, 2007 02:12 AM

Hello to all you fellow lizard owners out there! We're new to this forum, and very happy to find more information about these awesome creatures.

We have a juvenile California Alligator Lizard- about 2 months old, I'm guessing. He/she just shedded for the first time today. Can anyone out there tell if we have a male or female, based on these photos? (looking at head shape, perhaps) I haven't been able to handle the little guy to look underneath yet. Thanks!

Unless he gets ticked and everts a hemipene when you pick him up, it will likely be a year or two before you can make a guess of sex based on head shape. If you decide to keep him, make sure that the crickets are fed a nutritious diet and dusted with a phospherus free calcium supplement containing vitamin D3 at every feeding. These guys are very vulnerable to metabolic bone disease if not properly supplemented.
