Specialized teeth for Escargo

jimmy5871 Oct 09, 2007 10:09 AM

I found this article about teeth (I knew I read this somewhere)

Food Habits

Brown snakes feed largely on earthworms, snails, and slugs, but will also eat small salamanders, soft-bodied grubs, and beetles. They have specialized teeth and jaws that allow them to pull snails out of their shells and eat them. (Ditmars, 1936; Harding, 1997)

Maybe mine isn't hungry enough yet, it looked and got close. There are small and large snails. There is moss, mulch and soil and the snails prefer the plexiglass top and glass sides.

It either may not be hungry or it's just not "ready". I've never dealt with captive browns but I worked with a wild-caught Red-bellied Snake that took about two months to start eating. It was slightly complicated because she was gravid for the first month but based on experiences with other snakes a month is not uncommon

I've had it for 1 year. I hand feed it worms. There has been several sheds so that would make it a youngster, maybe snails are a new experience for it. The snails are real messy (poop and slime).

Thanks............

Just give it worms.
And several sheds doesn't mean it's young. Brown snakes will easily shed several times a year no matter how old they are.
