lacerta lizards

goawaynow Aug 22, 2003 04:09 PM

I work in a petstore and we resently got in 3 pretty little lacerta lizards. The wholesaler we deal with is not the best with identifing animals, thats up to me because I'm about the only one who cares for all the animals there. I don't know anything about them right now. If anyone could help that would be great. total lenth is about 6-8 inches. one is bright green, one is grayish with darker gray spots mainly down it's dorsle and the 3rd is kinda inbetween the two. if anyone could tell me what kind of lacerta we have it would be a big help. I'm thinking of taking them all home but want to have the proper setup for them. they all look healthy. nice and fat, clear eyes, nose everything. they are all active.
Thanks for any info you can give me.

Sounds to me as though they could be Juvenille Eyed Lizards (also known as Jewelled Lizards) (Lacerta Lepida)

If you're going to take them home, try and get a vivarium for each one, as males are very territorial, so if you put in two males without knowing, you could end up wiht only two lizards. If you can try and post pictures of them, i'd gladly help.

Thanks, I will try to get some pictures of them up. I need to borrow a digital camera from my boyfriend first. The green one is very calm I can hold him with no problem, the other two bite and one runs up to me to bite me. they dont hurt, its kind of funny. can you give me any info on them or a good website. thanks again, I'll try to get some pics of them this week.

I can give you info for them no problem, but i'll wait till i've seen the pictures, because i don't want to give you information that isn't correct. Sounds like typical male behaviour (the biting) but i'd try to tame them down as muchas possible if you plan to handle them later on, as their bite can be pretty nasty at times.

I got some pics that I will try to post tonight. I just tryed now and dont have a clue as to what Im doing so Im gonna get my boyfriend to help. the pics dont look like they came out real good so if they totally suck after I post them I'll get better one with a better camera. The one green lizard has small white spots on its sides and grayish green stripes on its back. the other one is simular but more grayish not green. and the 3rd one is gray with brownish blotches down its back and sides. Maybe that will help you some. I should have them posted tonight. Thanks

Known as Lacerta viridis. Eyed lizards (or you call them jeweled lacertas) would not be showing much green at 8 inches long, and they're bite is something that you would know about! They get to around 2 feet long, although they're SVL is around the 8 inch mark if you meant that. Eyed lizards also show large, bright blue spots down they're side.
Hope this helps, and good luck! They're both pretty easy to keep and require the same conditions.

For being as small as they are they have a good bite.It broke my skin but didnt draw any blood. The one has white spots down its sides, not blue. I'm gonna try to post some pics but I dont know if it will work. Also the pics really suck but better than nothing I guess.
