Keeping Heosemys grandis together???

oxyjansen Oct 17, 2007 04:31 AM

I have a large 12" Grandis believed to be a male, and I'm wondering how these turtles get along with each other? I'm considering getting another one, but considering the aggressive feeding responses I've seen I'd prefer to check in with other keepers before making a huge mistake!

Thanx

I've never personally kept Grandis but a friend of mine did & he had his in 2 groups of 3 & 4. If you have enough space you can put them together. You can also tell the gender by tail size males as in most turtles have a huge bulge while females are streamlined.

We figured out that we have a male, and from what everyone has told me we do not have enough space to provide adequate space for a pair to get away from each other. So, we're going to stick with just one till we move and can build a much bigger pond.

Thanx for your input!

Large males can be extremely aggressive in courtship behavior. I had one that regularly mounted a large female American red-bellied turtle and pounded his plastron violently on her carapace, causing scute damage.

Yeah, my adult male is very aggressive to the female too, and I had to separate them. Interestingly though, he is not aggressive to any other animals.

They get along quite well as hatchlings and subadults.
