dart frog feeding help?

myotismn Oct 21, 2007 09:02 AM

My wife recently got our first dart frog, a blue azureurus. He is just a little guy and I have fruit flies and pinheads to feed him. While he is so small I have him in a five gal tank. When I dump in a handful of flies or the crickets, they immediately scatter or climb the cage wall. (The fruitflies climb out through the screen too which I'm not happy about). The little frog eagerly catches or chases a couple down but by the time he has them the rest are long gone. Sometimes the crickets come out when I mist the cage and he'll snag one or two. But I worry that he is getting enough. Is there a better way to feed him. What does everyone else do?

You can try feeding fewer insects at a time twice a day, and putting in a piece of fruit such as an orange slice (which lasts longer) or banana where the flies and crickets will tend to congregate.

Most keepers use glass tops, which not only minimize prey escapes, but maintain the high humidty darts require. Screen tops should at least be covered with plastic such as Saran Wrap.
